The River Runs Deep

Our departure day was June 18, 1944.

I remember the date well as it was my birthday. We traveled to Annapolis Royal by bus, having sent the canoe by train. At Annapolis Royal, as previously arranged, we met our truck driver, picked up the canoe, and traveled over the South Mountain to South Milford, a lake area which is the headwater of the Mersey River which would be our thoroughfare. We disembarked at the Milford House, a well known wilderness retreat. This had also been the departure point for the Payne trip in 1908, although they traveled to Lake Kejimkujik by wagon.
